Recently I have had a few of my clients and potential clients call me very alarmed and disturbed by supposedly IRS Agents contacting them demanding payment and threatening with criminal prosecution if they did not comply.
Many Taxpayers do not think they have rights with the IRS and many of those who do are unsure as to what those rights are.
The IRS does have a Taxpayer Bill of Rights. The IRS has publicized was 10 fundamental rights every taxpayer has.
Facts the IRS will not tell you:
- It is very unlikely that you will get audited. The IRS audited less than 1% of tax returns last year and most likely that will be even lower this year due to budget cuts and understaffing. There are some taxpayers however, that their chances of being audited are increased greatly.
On October 15, 2013, the millions of taxpayers who filed extensions were required to file and pay their tax return, even with the partial federal shutdown. For those due a refund, you’ll have to wait. The IRS will not be issuing refunds during the shutdown.
